General Bird Hunting Information

Southern Africa boasts some of the best wing shooting in the world. The diverse ecosystem, from desolate windswept mountains to subtropical low-lying wetlands, supports the widest array of gamebirds found in the region. Whether you are a collector of specific gamebird species or a passionate wing shooter looking for the ultimate bird hunting adventure, our top-notch wing shooting locations cater to all enthusiasts. Wing shooting in Africa and South Africa consistently yields excellent results.

Bird hunting seasons differ by region, but typically, the prime months stretch from March to September. The season kicks off with some of the best hot barrel pigeon shooting globally.

The diverse range of bird species available guarantees a rich wing shooting experience. In our northern territories, large groups of helmeted Guinea Fowl are prevalent. There are seven species of Francolin, including the notably challenging Greywing, found in the expansive mountains of the Eastern Cape, soaring above 6,000 feet and hunted with well-trained pointers. Waterfowl, comprising 12 different species, including the massive Spurwing Goose, are primarily hunted from hides and over decoys. For truly exhilarating hot barrel shooting, nothing compares to the vast flocks of pigeons and doves taken over sunflower or cornfields.

Wing shooting safaris are customized to meet the unique needs of each group and can include photography, sightseeing, and plains game hunting, which can all be incorporated to diversify the itinerary and accommodate non-hunting companions. Given the various wing shooting options and species, the focus is on variety over quantity. Nevertheless, early season hunts often yield some impressive bags.

We highly recommend the use of 12 Gauge shotguns, as ammunition is readily accessible. While we suggest a minimum of four hunters to organize an effective safari, we also cater to smaller, more exclusive groups.
